Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico remains in serious condition in intensive care and will remain in hospital in the city of Banksa Bistrica until at least May 20, government officials and local media said on Friday.

He may be moved to the hospital in the Slovak capital Bratislava after that date, according to them.

Fico, who was shot four times on May 15, is able to speak a little and his health has improved since the attack, after his injuries were life-threatening.

Local media reported on Friday that doctors will assess Fico's condition on May 20 to decide if he can be moved to the capital's hospital.

Fico, a veteran politician in Slovakia who returned to become prime minister for a fourth term after his Smer party won elections last September, had left a meeting of his government in the town of Handlova, nearly 200 kilometers to the northeast. of the Slovak capital, when an armed man approached and shot him.

The attacker was "politically motivated", said Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak on Thursday, who is also the Minister of Defense and a close ally of Fico in his Smer party.

Local media reported on Thursday that the suspect in Fico's assassination, who was arrested at the scene moments after he opened fire, is charged with attempted murder.

The suspect's name has not been released, but media reports say he is a 71-year-old man.

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova called on Thursday for an end to the "violent hatred" that has gripped Slovakia.

"We must get out of this cycle of violent hatred and mutual accusations. What happened yesterday was an individual act, but the tense atmosphere of hatred is our joint work," she said./ REL
