US authorities said the man who tried to kill former President Donald Trump acted alone and no one else was involved.

FBI officials also stressed at a press conference Wednesday that a motive for the assassination remains unknown and said Thomas Crooks, the 20-year-old attacker, had a "mix of ideologies."

The law enforcement agency described Crooks' search history and released photos of the gun he used and improvised explosive devices found in his car.

Crooks attempted to shoot the former president at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. He wounded Trump in the ear, killed one man and seriously injured two others.

Kevin Rojek, head of the FBI's Pittsburgh office, said Crooks began searching the Internet for Trump campaign events beginning in September 2023. He searched for Trump rallies as well as those of President Joe Biden, who was still the Democratic candidate at the time of the shooting.

He also requested the location of the Republican and Democratic national conventions.

"When ... Trump's rally was announced in early July, he became very focused on that specific event and saw it as a target of opportunity," Rojek said.

On the same day, the 20-year-old asked how far assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was from John F Kennedy when the Marine veteran shot dead the US president in 1963. Crooks also asked “Where will Trump speak at the Butler Farm Show?”, gathering place.

His search history showed he had also tried to find instructions and ingredients for making bombs, authorities said.

"We believe that the subject is involved in the detailed planning of the attack," Mr. Guard.
