Theft, receiving stolen goods, fraud and money laundering. A criminal conspiracy centered on the technique of impersonating the Carabinieri was uncovered by the Provincial Command of Milan, which in recent days executed precautionary measures against 21 people: one detained, six in prison, 14 under house arrest.
The arrests were carried out on 11 December, following an in-depth investigation called 'Altro Mondo' ('Another World') carried out by the Milan Investigation Unit, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office, which began in 2023 following a series of thefts, robberies and frauds committed against vulnerable individuals using the technique of posing as false Carabinieri.
The modus operandi was always the same. The victims, usually elderly people who were caught walking home alone, were approached and shown their badges. The criminals would then enter the homes, stealing as much as possible in a few minutes, disorienting the victims, who were unaware of what was happening. Often, the jewelry was stolen and transported abroad using a camper van as a cover, where it was cleaned with the cooperation of jewelry stores and gold buyers.
The investigation was also made possible thanks to international cooperation. The army identified a group of Sinti origin with a base of operations in the Muggiano district of Milan. The perpetrators were linked to 12 robberies, 10 of which involved impersonating carabinieri, as well as 15 incidents of receiving stolen goods, eight cases of money laundering and two cases of self-laundering carried out in Italy, Switzerland and Belgium.
The value of the stolen items is approximately 2.5 million euros. During the checks, which were also carried out in Switzerland with the assistance of the Federal Office of Customs and Border Protection, 43,000 euros in cash, numerous valuable watches, gold bars, handbags and jewelry, as well as radio transmitters, scanners and two empty pistols were found. During the investigation, 15,000 euros in cash and 500,000 euros in handbags and various valuables were seized.
Among those arrested and placed under house arrest is a 96-year-old woman who was actively involved in numerous incidents of receiving stolen goods. According to the military, she is the "leader" of the group that guarded the logistics base of Muggiano. In addition, two Italian men, aged 30 and 44, have already been arrested on suspicion of several burglaries involving elderly people in Milan, Monza and Livorno.
