It is almost impossible to know exactly how many troops are being killed or wounded in Ukraine.
Kiev does not release official figures and it is widely believed that Russia significantly understates its figures.
But if US intelligence is to be believed, the death toll could be approaching a major milestone.
US officials have told the New York Times that they estimate about 500,000 Ukrainian or Russian troops have been killed or wounded in the first 18 months of the war.
Interestingly, Russian casualties are believed to be much higher than Ukraine's.
Officials said Russia's casualties were approaching 300,000, including about 120,000 deaths. The Kremlin claims in its official count that only 6,000 Russians were killed.
On the other hand, Ukraine is close to 200 thousand victims. This consists of 70,000 deaths and up to 120,000 injuries.
However, these figures come with the caveat that Russian troops are thought to outnumber Ukrainians by about three to one. This means that Kiev is losing a larger part of its forces.
