US military strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities last weekend did not destroy key components of the country's nuclear program and are likely to set it back only a few months, according to an early US intelligence assessment obtained by CNN.
The report was prepared by the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon's intelligence arm. It is based on a damage assessment conducted by U.S. Central Command after the U.S. strikes, one of the sources said.
Analysis of the damage to nuclear sites and the impact of the attacks on Iran's nuclear ambitions is ongoing and may change as more information becomes available.
But the early findings contradict President Donald Trump's repeated claims that the strikes "completely destroyed" Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also said Sunday that Iran's nuclear facilities "have been eliminated."
Two of the people familiar with the assessment said Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles were not destroyed. One of the people said they were largely "intact."
"So the (DIA) assessment is that the US was probably a few months late, at best," the person added.
The White House acknowledged the existence of the assessment, but stated that it did not agree with it.
