President Donald Trump has scheduled a meeting with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, during the NATO summit, according to a White House official.
The meeting comes at a time when the focus on Russia's war with Ukraine has been relegated to the background, due to the Israel-Iran conflict.
On the eve of the summit, it was unclear whether Zelensky would attend, due to fears that a visit would not be worthwhile without a guarantee of significant meeting time with Trump.
Earlier this month, Zelensky flew to Canada for the G7 meeting of world leaders with the hope of a meeting with the US president, but Trump left the summit early.
Trump said Tuesday morning aboard Air Force One, en route to The Hague, Netherlands, that he would "probably" meet with Zelensky, although he did not confirm it at the time.
The two last met face-to-face in April at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City during Pope Francis' funeral. It was their first face-to-face meeting since their fiery February showdown in the Oval Office.
