Iran has almost ready a draft protocol with Oman to establish a new monitoring and navigation regime in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced this afternoon.
According to the official IRNA news agency, Gharibabadi stated that the draft protocol is in the final stages of preparation. Once finalized, Iran will launch official negotiations with Oman to reach a joint agreement.
"The draft of this protocol is currently in the final stages of preparation. As soon as we have it ready, we will start negotiations with Oman in order to draft a joint protocol ," Gharibabadi told Sputnik.
The Deputy Minister explained that the new protocol stipulates that, in peacetime, all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz must have full agreements with the coastal states, Iran and Oman, and obtain the necessary permits and licenses in advance.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategic sea lanes in the world, through which about 20% of the world's shipborne oil passes. Any change in the navigation regime in this area has significant implications for international energy security.
