Iran has fired two medium-range ballistic missiles towards Diego Garcia, a joint US-UK strategic military base in the Indian Ocean, The Guardian reports.
Neither missile hit the base, according to media reports, with one malfunctioning in flight, while a US warship attempted to intercept the other with an SM-3 missile. It is not clear whether the interception was successful, the newspaper said, citing US officials.
Neither Iranian nor American authorities have issued a statement regarding the reported attack.
The attempted strike is significant for what it shows about Iran's capabilities. Diego Garcia is about 4,000 kilometers from Iran, double the 2,000-kilometer limit that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said last month that Tehran had deliberately set for its arsenal.
The island, the largest in the Chagos Archipelago in the central Indian Ocean, has hosted a joint US-British military presence since the 1970s and serves as a base for long-range bombers and other strategic assets.
The US-Israeli attacks on Iran began on February 28 and are said to have killed 1,300 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded with attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries that host US military bases.
