The missile, detected over Iraqi and Syrian airspace, was neutralized by NATO defense systems in the Eastern Mediterranean; Turkish authorities say there were no casualties.
Turkey announced that NATO defense systems intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Iran before it entered Turkish airspace.
According to a statement from the Turkish Defense Ministry, the missile was detected heading towards Turkey after passing through the airspace of Iraq and Syria. Authorities said the air defense system deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean reacted in time and neutralized the threat in the air.
In the statement, Turkish authorities stressed that the country "reserves the right to respond to any hostile attitude" towards its territory.
"A ballistic missile, launched from Iran and detected heading towards Turkish airspace after passing through Iraqi and Syrian airspace, was intercepted in time and neutralized by NATO defense systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean," the statement said.
According to the same statement from the Turkish ministry, the munition that fell in the Dertyol region of Hatay province was part of Turkey's air defense system, which intercepted the threat in the air. There were no casualties or injuries in the incident.
"We remind you that we reserve the right to respond to any hostile attitude towards our country. We call on all parties to refrain from actions that could aggravate the conflict in the region. In this context, we will continue to consult with NATO and our other allies. This is respectfully announced to the public," the Turkish Defense Ministry announced.
Today is the fifth day of the conflict in the Middle East and Israel is continuing to bomb both Iran and Lebanon, with more than a thousand civilians reported to have been killed in the Islamic Republic since Saturday.
Tehran is also continuing its attacks on its neighbors, launching drones and missiles toward several Gulf countries in retaliation for US and Israeli attacks.
Meanwhile, four of the six American service members killed in an Iranian attack on a Kuwaiti port on Sunday have been identified. At least five people were killed in an Israeli strike on a four-story residential building in the Lebanese city of Baalbek this morning, according to Lebanese state media.
Israel has said it struck the command centers of Iran's internal security apparatus in overnight attacks on Tehran.
