Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has responded to US President Donald Trump's threats to halt trade with Spain, expressing his opposition to the war and what he called a "violation of international law".
Sanchez reiterated on Wednesday his opposition to the United States and Israel's attack on Iran, warning that the conflict is like playing "Russian roulette" with the lives of millions of people, Reuters reports .
The statement came after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut off trade relations with Madrid over the Spanish government's stance on the conflict.
"This is how the great catastrophes of humanity begin... You cannot play Russian roulette with the fate of millions of people," Sanchez said in a televised address to the nation.
Tensions between the two NATO allies rose after Sanchez described the US and Israeli bombing of Iran as reckless and illegal.
The Spanish government then banned US aircraft from using air and naval bases in southern Spain for operations against Tehran.
Sanchez stressed that international problems cannot be solved with wars and bombings.
"The Spanish government's position can be summed up in four words: 'No to war,'" he said, adding that this position is consistent and not a temporary or insincere stance.
"We will not become complicit in something that is harmful to the world and contrary to our values and interests, just to avoid punishment from someone," Sanchez declared, indirectly referring to Trump's trade threats.
The Spanish prime minister also cited the negative consequences of the war in Iraq, including the rise of jihadist terrorism and rising energy prices, to argue that even an attack on Iran could have unpredictable consequences and would not lead to a more just international order.
In a 10-minute speech, Sánchez reflected on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as the Iraq War over 20 years ago, saying that "we will not repeat the mistakes of the past."
He spoke of the "catastrophe" of the war in the Middle East, two days after his appeal for both sides to withdraw from the conflict and respect international law.
"The world, Europe and Spain have already experienced this 23 years ago, when another American administration dragged us into a war in the Middle East, a war that in theory, according to what was declared at the time, was aimed at eliminating Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, bringing democracy and guaranteeing global security, but which in reality produced the opposite effect, causing the greatest wave of insecurity that our continent has experienced since the fall of the Berlin Wall," the prime minister stressed, adding that the war in Iraq "has brought about a drastic increase in jihadist terrorism, a serious migration crisis in the eastern Mediterranean and a general increase in energy prices and the cost of living," Sánchez said.
Trump threatened to impose a full trade embargo on Spain in response to Madrid's refusal to allow the US to use joint bases in Morón and Rota for attacks on Iran.
“Spain has been terrible,” Trump said during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday. “We will cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want to have anything to do with Spain,” he added.
Merz later said he had clearly told Trump that he could not sign a separate agreement with Germany or with all of Europe, but not with Spain.
Trump has also accused Spain of being a "terrible partner" in NATO for failing to increase its defense budget in line with the 5% target of economic output (GDP).
