An Iranian attack group "attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump," the United States claims.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth revealed at a press conference that US forces neutralized the commander of the unit in question, telling reporters that they "tracked him down and killed him."
"The head of the unit that tried to assassinate President Trump, but was found and killed. Iran tried to assassinate President Trump. And President Trump was the one who had the last laugh," Hegseth said.
Referring to US operations in the Middle East, Hegseth argued that the US is prevailing in its military campaign against Iran "with determination, devastation and without mercy."
He also said that additional forces, including fighter jets and bombers, would soon be deployed to the region. He stressed that the US would "dedicate all the time necessary to ensure that we succeed," according to the Mirror.
The revelation came during the briefing, where Hegseth also reported that a US submarine sank an Iranian warship.
He also claimed that the Iranian regime "is finished" and declared that the US is "winning, decisively, devastatingly and mercilessly", hinting that further military action was imminent, adding: "Larger and larger waves are coming".
Earlier, White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt briefed reporters at a press conference about the US war with Iran.
"President Trump is holding these monsters accountable and destroying their nuclear ambitions forever."
Future generations of Americans will remember this moment as the moment when the specter of a nuclear Iran ended.
"When Trump threatens, he is not bluffing. He is the man of action who is eliminating Iran's nuclear ambitions where previous leaderships have looked weak," she said.
According to Caroline Levitt, President Trump established four clear pillars for American military action:
Destroying missiles and the domestic missile industry.
Eliminating the Iranian navy.
Neutralizing Iran's proxies so that they no longer pose a threat to the region.
Ensuring that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons.
It was also reported that 49 Iranian officials "disappeared from the face of the Earth," while emphasizing that the Iranian citizens' hope for freedom now rests in their hands.
