Only one senator betrays Trump ...
Republicans rejected a resolution aimed at asking President Donald Trump for congressional approval for future U.S. military action against Iran.
The Senate voted 47 to 53 to defeat the measure, with Republican Senator Rand Paul joining nearly all Democrats in pushing it forward, and Democratic Senator John Fetterman voting alongside Republicans to block it.
Even if the measure had advanced, it would have faced an uphill battle on Capitol Hill, as it would have had to withstand a full amendment process in the Senate before passing the House, and then a possible presidential veto that requires a two-thirds vote to override it.
The Republican senators' decision to defend the president comes after Trump sharply criticized the five senators in his party who voted to advance an earlier war powers resolution on military action in Venezuela. Of those five, only one - Paul - voted again to check the president's powers.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the same issue on Thursday.
