Former NATO chief Javis Solana said Monday that he believes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the "worst politician" in Israel's history.
"I don't think anything good will come of this. But this can happen if Netanyahu disappears from Israeli politics," Solana told Spanish television Cadena Ser.
He also emphasized that despite American support for Israel, President Joe Biden "doesn't like Netanyahu at all." "Those two are not friends, but neither are they enemies. "Biden has never accepted Netanyahu in the White House," added the former diplomat. He said Biden is constantly pressuring Netanyahu not to repeat the mistakes the US made in Iraq after the 9/11 attacks.
Solana was the Secretary General of NATO from 1995 to 1999 and as the head of EU diplomacy from 1999 to 2009. He went on to point out that he "spent a lot of time in Gaza" during his career, including talks for the EU to oversee the Rafah border crossing from Gaza to Egypt in order to keep it open. That program started in 200 and lasted 19 months.
He also called the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, a "huge mistake", saying they undermined the earlier idea that the countries would recognize Israel through peace talks with Palestine.
"I think the idea of peace for recognition or recognition for peace was a very beautiful idea," said Solana. Referring to the context before the Hamas attack, Solana also criticized Netanyahu for "undertaking a massive campaign to turn himself into an autocrat" through judicial reform.
