Two one-year-old twin girls were lost at sea when the boat they were on along with many other migrants ran aground in a storm while trying to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa from Tunisia, the organization Save the Children said today.
About 60 people, including the mother of twins, were rescued on Thursday. However, one man died after being stranded on the Italian island.
"Two one-year-old twin sisters are missing and a man has died after the boat arrived in Lampedusa," according to the organization that is providing assistance to the survivors. The survivors, who include 22 unaccompanied minors and two children, "faced extremely difficult weather conditions, exacerbated by the passage of storm Hari," it explained.
The migrants are described as having set off from Tunisia and experienced rough seas for at least three days. Their physical and psychological condition is "serious," according to Save the Children.

The central Mediterranean is considered the most dangerous sea route in the world for migrants by the International Organization for Migration.
"Due to the lack of safe (maritime) routes, those seeking a future in Europe by sailing the Mediterranean continue to risk their lives on dangerous, often deadly journeys, as evidenced by more than 33,300 dead or missing at sea since 2024," Save the Children said in a statement, once again calling for "the opening of regular and safe routes to Europe and the implementation of a coordinated search and rescue system in the Mediterranean."
"We cannot remain silent in the face of the loss of human lives, including children, that has been happening for years," said Georgia D'Errico, the non-governmental organization's international relations director.
