Today, Italy says goodbye to former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, after his death at the age of 86. His funeral was attended by thousands of citizens, his sympathizers, but also the highest political leaders in Italy. President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Georgia Meloni were greeted with applause. The body of the former prime minister arrived at the Cathedral of Milan, where it is expected to be cremated.
Italian media reports that Berlusconi's children were seen in tears during the funeral ceremony, as well as his partner Marta Fascina.
" Emotions surround the family of Silvio Berlusconi as soon as the coffin of the former prime minister arrives in front of the altar in the cathedral of Milan ", writes the Italian media La Republica.
Berlusconi's coffin left the Villa San Martino in Arcore, outside Milan, and was carried through the city center to Milan's Gothic Duomo cathedral for Wednesday's service.
A day of mourning has also been declared for the former prime minister, but some have objected to the strangeness of the exemption for a colorful figure who was briefly banned from politics after a 2012 conviction for tax fraud.
Berlusconi, who had a long and scandal-ridden career, died in a Milan hospital on Monday aged 86.
His funeral drew crowds from across Italy, including supporters of Berlusconi - some of whom waved flags bearing the name of his Forza Italia party - and fans of the AC Milan soccer team he owned. Large television screens were erected outside the cathedral to show moments of the funeral.
