After 26 years, Israel has regained control of large areas of southern Lebanon. Few civilians remain in these territories, with the exception of a few villages inhabited mainly by Christian communities.
In one of these areas, an Israeli soldier was photographed striking a statue of the crucified Jesus Christ with a sharp object. The incident has prompted immediate reactions.
The Israeli military has announced that it has launched an investigation into the case. According to an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, quoted by ANSA, the soldier has been identified and the results of the investigation will be made public upon its completion.
The Israeli government condemned the action, while Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called it "an act of violence against Christians."
The Assembly of the Catholic Ordinariate of the Holy Land expressed “deep indignation” and “unreserved condemnation” for the desecration and destruction of the image of Christ crucified. In a statement signed by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the event was described as a “grave affront to the Christian faith” and linked to “other reported cases of desecration of Christian symbols.”
The Assembly also highlights a "worrying failure in moral and human formation" and recalls Pope Leo's call for a "disarmed and disarming" peace.
