The head of Gaza's largest hospital has stated that more than 35,000 people have taken shelter in the city's hospital complex, while Israel's ultimatum to evacuate has expired.
Mohammad Abu Selim, director general of Shifa Hospital, confirmed that massive crowds had thronged the building and the courtyard outside. Shifa is the largest hospital in the entire Gaza Strip.
" People think this is the only safe space after their homes were destroyed and they were forced to flee. Gaza City is a terrifying scene of destruction ," said Dr. Medhat Abbas, an official of the Ministry of Health.
The Israeli military has ordered roughly half of Gaza's population, including all of Gaza City, to evacuate as it prepares to send in ground forces. But evacuation for more than 1.5 million inhabitants is extremely difficult in the conditions in which they are.
Israel, meanwhile, has bombed Gaza over the past week, killing more than 2,200 so far in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas that killed more than 1,300 Israelis.
