The hunt for Hamas leaders, how are the Israeli army and spies doing?

Over twenty years ago, on October 12, 2000, in the midst of the Intifada, two Israeli reservists mistakenly ended up in Ramallah, a Palestinian city. Detained by the police, they were massacred inside a police station. One of the killers, Aziz Salah, looks out the window of the building and shows his blood-stained hands to the cheering crowd. The image was like a confession.

In the following months, Israel captured him along with the other culprits. But Salah was released in 2011 after a prisoner swap with Hamas, a swap linked to the release of soldier Shali. Crossroads of stories that now return.

The army, along with the Shin Bet (military secret service), are on the trail of those responsible for the kibbutz massacres. They have in their hands the videos from surveillance cameras and cars, the clips posted online by the Mujahideen to celebrate the victory. The faces of some are identifiable, they represent the first movement of a hunt now underway.

The chaos caused by raids can favor the activity of spies, forcing them to move, risking and exposing themselves to the fire of drones constantly patrolling a squared area. An operation was carried out by the Special Forces in the northern part of Gaza in an attempt to recover data useful for locating the hostages. Attacks hit the tunnels, actions where explosive bombs were thrown along the possible direction of the tunnel.

During the last few hours, several militias have been eliminated. According to the army, the attacks neutralized Morad Abu Morad and Alì Qadi, presented as one of the commanders of the Nukhba special unit, the protagonist of the October 7 attack. Captured in 2005 by the Israelis, Qadi was released in 2011 in exchange for the soldier Shalit, who was held hostage by the fundamentalists.

On the other hand, CNN, after analyzing the propaganda films released by Hamas in the last two years, has shown at least six spots in Gaza where the Ezzedine al Kassam Brigades have prepared undisturbed. They are small, almost identical bases protected by sand walls, with rudimentary houses converted into firing ranges where the Mujahideen tested tactics, including taking prisoners.

Meanwhile, the documents "found" in the backpacks of the murdered attackers appeared today. Some surprisingly have the date 2022. They also show the use of groups of 5-7 fedayeen on motorcycles and pick-up trucks. So the attack was planned and Israel must think carefully about every step it will take. / Corriere Della Sera
