Israel attacked an area on the outskirts of Beirut on Tuesday night in an attempt to hit a senior commander of the militant group Hezbollah. The airstrike, according to Israeli authorities, was in retaliation for a weekend rocket attack inside Israel that killed 12 children.
According to the Lebanese state media, one woman has died, while seven people have been injured, reports the Reuters agency.
A witness told Reuters that he heard a loud explosion and saw plumes of smoke around 19:40 in a suburb south of the Lebanese capital, Hezbollah's base.
According to a Lebanese security source, a senior Hezbollah commander was targeted in the airstrike and his condition remains unclear.
The state news agency of Lebanon announced that it attacked the area around the Consultative Council of Hezbollah.
In a statement to the media, the Israeli military announced that it had carried out "an attack in Beirut against the commander responsible for the killing of children in Majdal Shams and the killing of a number of other Israeli civilians."
The Israeli attack was in response to a rocket attack on the Golan, which is under Israeli control, that killed Druze children while playing on a soccer field, VOA reports.
Hezbollah has denied being behind the attack.
Reacting to reports of the Israeli strike, the United States said it does not think war between Hezbollah and Israel is imminent, according to spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre.
The Israeli attack was immediately condemned by Iran, which called it a "low-level aggression" by Israel, while the Palestinian militant group Hamas called it a "dangerous escalation". The attack was also condemned by Russia as a "flagrant violation of international law", informs the Reuters agency.
