Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has resigned after a year in office, following two major election defeats.
The decision comes a day after his Liberal Democratic Party was expected to vote on whether to hold an internal vote to remove him from the party's top position.
This party has ruled Japan for almost seven decades, but under Ishiba it lost its majority in the lower house of parliament for the first time in 15 years, and then lost its majority in the upper house of parliament in July.
Japan, the world's fourth-largest economy and a close ally of the United States, is now facing a period of political uncertainty as tensions with China and regional uncertainties rise, reports " REL ".
"Now that a conclusion has been reached in the negotiations regarding US tariffs, I believe the time is right," Ishiba said, referring to the agreement signed last week to reduce tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Japanese cars and other exports.
He resisted calls for his resignation until Sunday, saying it was his responsibility to resolve differences with Washington.
"I deeply believed that the negotiations regarding US tariffs, which could be described as a national crisis, should have ended as the responsibility of our administration," he said, among other things.
Ishiba, 68, has said he will continue his responsibilities "to the people" until a new prime minister is elected.
He rose to office in October 2024 vowing to combat rising prices, but inflation, which has doubled rice prices last year, has had a deeply damaging effect on his leadership.
Reasons for the decline in public support have also been his decisions to appoint only two women to the cabinet, as well as to purchase expensive gifts for party members.
