A year after the overthrow of his regime in Syria, Bashar al-Assad is said to have left politics behind forever and is trying to return to his original capacity as a doctor, this time from his exile in Russia.
According to "The Guardian", citing sources with knowledge of the family's movements, the former Syrian president is attending ophthalmology courses in Moscow classrooms.
As reported by a friend of the Assad family who keeps in touch with them, the former president is “learning Russian and refreshing his knowledge in ophthalmology.” According to the same source, this is a field that has always interested him and he is not taking it up again for livelihood reasons, as “of course he doesn’t need the money.”
It is recalled that before the start of the war in Syria, Assad periodically practiced his medical specialty in Damascus, with some estimating that the wealthy Russian elite could be his future clientele.
A life of luxury, but also in isolation
The Assad family is said to now be living a secluded and quiet life of luxury, mostly in Moscow and the United Arab Emirates. Family friends, sources in Russia and Syria, and media leaks describe the daily life of the once powerful family that ruled Syria with an iron fist.
According to two sources with knowledge of their living conditions, the Assad family likely resides in Rublyovka, one of Moscow's most expensive and guarded areas, known as a "haven" for the Russian elite. The same area is also said to be the home of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled Kiev in 2014.
Economical comfort and travel
Despite Western sanctions imposed in 2011 after the violent suppression of protests in Syria, the Assad family is not facing financial problems. Most of its wealth was transferred to Moscow over time, where Western regulators could not "touch" it.
However, the Assads' financial comfort no longer comes with influence. According to Guardian sources, the family has completely cut themselves off from the Syrian and Russian networks they used to operate in. The sudden departure from Syria is said to have left many of the former president's former allies unhappy, while his Russian "manipulators" are said to be preventing him from contacting senior figures in the former regime.
"It's a very quiet life," said a family friend. "He has little, if any, contact with the outside world. He only communicates with a few people who were in his inner circle, like Mansoor Azam (former minister of presidential affairs) and Yasser Ibrahim (former economic adviser)."
The Kremlin is no longer indifferent to Assad

Asadi iku nga Damasku me bijtë e tij në orët e para të 8 dhjetorit 2024 , ndërsa rebelët sirianë i afroheshin kryeqytetit nga veriu dhe jugu. Ata u pritën nga një eskortë ushtarake ruse dhe u çuan në bazën ajrore ruse Hmeimim, nga ku u larguan me aeroplan nga vendi.

The only time the Assad family, without Bashar, has appeared in public since the fall of the regime was at the graduation ceremony of Bashar’s daughter, Zain al-Assad, on June 30, when she received a degree in international relations from Moscow’s MGIMO university. A photo on MGIMO’s official website shows 22-year-old Zain standing with other graduates. In a separate, blurry video from the event, members of the Assad family can be seen in the audience, including Asma and her two sons, Hafez, 24, and Karim, 21.
The Assad children also frequently travel to the UAE, with Asma accompanying them on at least one of these trips. Leaked flight records, seen by the Guardian and covering the period 2017-2023, show that the UAE had long been a favourite destination for the Assad family, even when they were in power. Karim and Hafez made repeated trips between Abu Dhabi, Moscow and Syria, including flights in November 2022 and September 2023.
