As former President Donald Trump races toward the Republican presidential nomination, Joe Biden is moving quickly to bolster his re-election chances.
As we head into a long and difficult election season between the two popular candidates, Biden is setting the stage on fire by trying to turn the upcoming election into a "battle for democracy." Yet week after week, he finds himself having to turn more and more to the often non-political media to convince the electorate to re-elect him.
So, a few days ago he sent some of his most trusted advisers to lead his re-election campaign in the state of Delaware, in response to Donald Trump's surprisingly easy victory in the Iowa primary.
The president's political strategy office is feverishly seeking allies across the board from TV hosts, social media celebrities and each candidate's dream ally: global superstar Taylor Swift. As Biden seeks to turn the election into a referendum on Trump, he is constantly shifting the public debate to his anti-democratic positions on abortion rights, immigrants and disdain for institutions.
He believes that the more people see clearly what Trump is, the more they will be discouraged from voting for him. His advisers assure him that few people have forgotten the events of January 6, as it has become a historic day similar to September 11 in the American consciousness. They believe that the "anti-Trump" message is what can rally voters who care about democracy under the Biden umbrella, even if he would not be their first choice under other circumstances.
Its impact in 2020
The desire for clear support on the part of Taylor Swift is not accidental. The 34-year-old star and baseball fan, who can reach tens of millions of users with a single social media post, has gotten involved in politics again for the benefit of Democrats. In 2020, she endorsed the Biden candidacy, and last year, with her endorsement, she brought 35,000 new members to the Democratic Party in a matter of days. If the young pop star asks for monetary contributions, the party is sure to win several million dollars.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, one of Joe Biden's top proxies, practically begged him to get more involved in the president's campaign. Speaking to reporters after a Democratic debate in September, he said Taylor Swift is unique. The way she managed to attract so many young people and prove to them that they too have a voice and must make a choice showed that she has tremendous power.
The debate surrounding her and her 279 million Instagram followers has become so intense that Biden's team has asked candidates not to use her platform. Another idea, somewhat far-fetched, that fell on the table was this: The president himself should attend one of the concerts that will be included in her tour this year.
"We can't just hope for anti-Trump sentiment." Trump supporters will vote for him no matter what," said Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, a key Biden ally.
"What is most important is to create a front against it, made up of people who understand the importance of democracy and want to work together to save it," he said.
