Chaos in Greek skies, defect in frequency system blocks flights throughout
Air traffic in the region

A serious technical problem has paralyzed Greek airspace, forcing civil aviation authorities to temporarily suspend all flights in the Athens FIR. According to the official NOTAM, the temporary ban on departures (zero rate) was ordered due to a defect in communication frequencies, which directly affects the safety of air operations.

The problem has hit Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport hard, as well as regional airports, especially on a busy day due to travelers returning from the holidays. While flights that were already in the air were delayed, many planes were diverted to alternative airports.

Sources from the Greek Ministry of Transport confirm that the control centers of Athens and Macedonia have encountered problems with the radio frequency systems. Communications are limited and only a small part of flights over Greece are being allowed. According to the same sources, despite efforts to restore normality, the defect is not expected to be resolved before noon.

Planes currently landing at Greek airports are using manual navigation protocols, without the help of automatic systems, an emergency measure to maintain safety in the absence of technological coordination. Authorities have promised further information, but the situation remains uncertain and is significantly affecting air traffic in the region.
