British Typhoon fighter jets and French jets have carried out a joint strike on an ISIS underground weapons depot in the mountains north of Palmyra, the UK Ministry of Defence announced.
The facility, suspected of storing weapons and explosives, was hit with Paveway IV guided bombs. According to authorities, the target was successfully hit and there are no signs of civilian damage.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels to the facility. Initial indications are that the target was successfully hit. There were no signs of any civilian harm in the attack late Saturday and all aircraft returned safely," the Ministry of Defence said.
The operation is part of the international coalition's efforts to prevent the resurgence of ISIS in Syria, which was militarily defeated in 2019.
Officials stressed that the British air force continues patrols and targeted strikes as part of the international coalition against terrorism in Syria and Iraq.
The RAF has been using aerial drones and manned aircraft to strike ISIS fighters and targets as part of the international coalition since 2014.
The United Nations says ISIS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
