The European Council approves the conditions for the "revival" of

The European Council approved today the conditions that Turkey must fulfill in order to re-open Ankara's membership process in the European Union.

In the press conference he gave after the end of the Council today in Brussels, Oliver Varchelli, the Commissioner for Neighbourhood, said that today they reached a conclusion on what Ankara should do to restart the membership process.

He also mentioned that improvements are needed in terms of the rule of law in Turkey, and that an agreement at the level of the European Council is needed in order for the process to continue.

Varchelli added that the latest reports on EU-Turkey relations should not prevent Brussels from pursuing the positive agenda they have put on the table together with the High Representative, Joseph Borrell.

The reports presented by Borrell emphasized that Turkey should lay the foundations for a new beginning, as President Erdogan requested and proposed.

The conclusions, approved today by the Council, are related to the path of membership of the ten candidate countries for membership in the EU, based on the relevant progress reports of the Commission, but also the special report on the future of Euro-Turkish relations in terms of Turkey.

In the paragraphs related to Ankara, the following are expected: the improvement of Greek-Turkish relations, the escalation of tension in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the Council's expectation that Turkey maintain good neighborly relations and peaceful resolution of disputes with recourse, if necessary , to be elected to the International Court of Justice.

At the next European Council, which starts on Thursday, there will not be a final debate on the report presented by the Commission and Josep Borrell, due to lack of time and a heavy agenda.

In the last draft of the conclusions it is stated that "The Council takes into account the joint report of the High Representative and the Commission on the current state of EU-Turkey relations and will return to the issue at its next meeting".
