The Macedonian opposition opposes Xhafer's proposal for technical prime

The Macedonian opposition is considering the possibility of not participating in the technical Government of North Macedonia that should start work from January 28, 2024, or 100 days before the regular parliamentary elections that should be held on May 5, based on the agreement between the political parties reached on the 4 December.

The technical government has the task of organizing and running the elections, with the participation of the VMRO DPMNE, which must nominate its candidates for the Minister of Internal Affairs, Labor and Social Policy, as well as three deputy ministers.

VMRO DPMNE is discussing its position in the technical government due to the agreement between the SDSM and the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) that Talat Xhaferi, currently the Speaker of the Assembly, should be the technical prime minister.

" In the following days, the party bodies will meet and take the final decision whether or not the party will be part of the technical Government ," stated Antonio Milloshoski, MP and member of the VMRO DPMNE Executive Committee.

VMRO accuses DUI of involvement in organized crime and corruption, while Xhaferi of violating laws in the Assembly.

But, the deputy of this party, Antonio Miloshoski, says that he personally thinks that VMRO should be part of the government to disable, as he says, "the intentions of the current government to falsify the elections".

" I appreciate that when the government is led by a man like Talat Xhaferi, who has violated the rules of the Assembly many times, then he who intends not to participate in the technical Government would only give more chances to this power to make misuses in the election. Therefore, I estimate that VMRO should participate in the technical government in order to prevent the manipulation of the elections by SDSM and DUI ", said Milosheski.

Based on the Law on the work of the technical government, the candidate for prime minister must be proposed by the party with the largest number of deputies in the Assembly of North Macedonia.

In the parliamentary elections in 2020, the coalition led by SDSM had the largest number of deputies with a total of 46 deputies, while the opposition coalition had 44, but as a political party, VMRO DPMNE has the largest number of deputies with 38 against 31. SDSM deputies and 13 DUI deputies.

However, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski said that the agreement of the parties in power to appoint Talat Xhaferi as technical prime minister is in accordance with the law, since according to him, SDSM and DUI have the largest number of deputies, therefore they had received the mandate for the formation of the regular government by President Stevo Pendarovski in 2020.

Kovacevski: The position of the prime minister belongs to the coalition parties
" First of all, the law is not being violated because both the current government and the previous government are coalition governments based on the mandate given by the president of the state to the coalition that has at least 61 deputies in the Assembly, so you can't talk about breaking the law ," Prime Minister Kovacevski said.

Regarding the warning of VMRO-DPMNE not to nominate its ministers in the technical government, the prime minister said that it is a legal obligation for the parties and the opposition must also fulfill this.

"It is the duty of all political parties to participate in a government that should conduct the elections on a technical level. With this, we will have a democratic process that will not have any stain. I believe that all parties in accordance with the law should appoint their representatives in the technical government ", said Kovacevski.

DUI: There will be no government without an Albanian party
The DUI have said that with "the appointment of Talat Xhaferi as technical prime minister, the DUI is fulfilling its promise for the first Albanian prime minister".

As for the reaction of the Macedonian opposition, DUI says that "there can be no government without an Albanian party".

Regular parliamentary elections will be held together with the second round of presidential elections on May 5, while the first round of presidential elections is set for April 24./ REL
