North Korean leader Kim Jong Un accused the United States of increasing tensions and provocations, saying the Korean peninsula has never before faced the threat of nuclear war as it does now. His comments were reported on Friday evening by state media KCNA.
In a speech at a military exhibition in Pyongyang on Thursday, Kim Jong Un said that from his previous experience of negotiations, Washington had pursued an "aggressive and hostile" policy against Pyongyang.
" Never before have the warring parties on the Korean peninsula faced such a dangerous and sharp confrontation that could escalate into the most destructive thermonuclear war ," Kim Jong Un said, according to KCNA.
During US President-elect Donald Trump's first term, he and Kim Jong Un held three unprecedented meetings in Singapore, Hanoi and on the Korean border in 2018 and 2019.
But the talks failed to produce any concrete results due to differences between Washington's calls for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and Pyongyang's demands for sanctions relief.
In his speech, Kim Jong Un called for the development and upgrading of "ultra-modern" weapons and pledged to advance defense capabilities to strengthen the country's strategic position, KCNA reported. In the event called the Defense Development Exhibition, strategic and tactical weapons were presented.
Kim Jong Un's latest speech comes amid international criticism of his deepening military cooperation with Moscow. North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops to Russia to support its war against Ukraine.
Last week, Kim Jong Un urged the military to improve its fighting capabilities, blaming the United States and its allies for fueling tensions at the "severe stage in history" and calling the Korean peninsula "the biggest point hot in the world"./VOA
