Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Rally, has accused Meloni and von der Leyen of "conspiracy" to secure the latter's re-election.
It is not often that an Italian prime minister is in charge of the situation in Europe. But with Olaf Scholz and Emmanuel Macron who are increasingly facing criticism and with Pedro Sanchez who broke away in a short time and on the other hand with Rishi Sunak who has always been accused, Giorgia Meloni, the 'fascist' girl who returned in the center of the attacks, it is turning everything in its favor.
"It's Melon's moment. She has become the essential leader of Europe and her influence is expanding. The nationalist populist parties of the right and the extreme right, including Meloni's "brothers" are ready for big profits at the expense of the left and the greens", writes "The Guardian".
Meloni has surprised opponents since her promotion to prime minister in 2022.
Rather than abandoning the EU, she seems keen to run it.
Most important is her relationship with Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president who is seeking a second five-year term.
Von der Leyen had to follow Meloni, often visiting Italy to favor him.
That's because Meloni's support could be crucial when national leaders (not voters) choose the next head of the commission.
It's also because Meloni has substantial influence in shaping Europe's agenda, particularly on migration, climate and the management of troublemakers like Hungary's Viktor Orbán.
Its growing influence is helping to move the EU's center of gravity ever to the right.
The phenomenon of two empowered women running European affairs (once there was only one, Angela Merkel) emerged last year when Meloni helped von der Leyen finalize a controversial migration deal with Tunisia.
It was ready again in March when the EU gave €7.4bn (£6.3bn) to Egypt's abusive dictator Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, partly to stem the flow of migrants.
Mellon's idea, endorsed by von der Leyen, is to keep migrants away from Europe's borders, a radical break with previous EU asylum and refugee settlement policies.
Speaking at last week's candidate debate, von der Leyen criticized the parliament's far-right group Identity and Democracy, which includes the Alternative for Germany (AfD), France's National Rally (RN) (formerly Front National) and the League of Italy.

Europe's political establishment looks set for a proper start next month.
No wonder von der Leyen is moving to the right.
The German conservative has the support, albeit tepid, of the dominant center-right European People's Party in parliament.
Critics accuse him of serious mistakes regarding the pandemic, as well as the Gaza war. While she is determined to win, she needs the support that Meloni can provide.
Potentially beneficial right-wing schisms aside, the long-term combination of an ambitious Mellon and a needy von der Leyen is potentially dangerous for Europe.
"This double act could drag the EU deep into an ideological quagmire, while there are no practical and consensual answers to the urgent challenges", concludes The Guardian./ Adapted "Pamphlet"
