Russia has opened a criminal case against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and put him on the list of wanted persons, the Russian State News Agency TASS reported on Saturday. Ukraine described the announcement as evidence of Moscow's "desperation".
The TASS agency reported that the database of the Russian Interior Ministry indicated that Volodymyr Zelensky was on the list of wanted persons, but did not provide further details.
In a reaction, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin was himself subject to arrest based on an International Criminal Court arrest warrant.
" We would like to remind you that contrary to the worthless Russian announcements, an order of the International Criminal Court for the arrest of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on suspicion of war crimes is actually real and subject to implementation in 123 countries (of the world) ", the statement said.
Kiev said the Russian announcement was " evidence of the desperation of the Russian state machine and its propaganda, which cannot think of any other way to attract attention ".
Since the start of the attack on Ukraine in February 2020, Russia has issued arrest warrants for a number of politicians, both Ukrainian and European.
In February, Russian police put Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Lithuania's culture minister and former Latvian parliament members on a wanted list, accusing them of destroying Soviet-era monuments.
Moscow also issued an arrest warrant for the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, who last year prepared the arrest warrant for Russian President Putin on suspicion of war crimes./VOA
