A Madrid court has ordered the wife of Spain's prime minister to stand trial. She is accused of embezzlement, abuse of influence, corporate corruption and trademark theft.

The decision comes after a two-year investigation into Begoña Gomez's tenure as a professor at a private university in Madrid, where she is suspected of using her relationship with Pedro Sanchez to influence authorities and officials.

As reported by 'El Pais', Gomez was informed of this development today while on a trip with Sanchez to China.

Along with Gomez, two other people are being tried, former advisor to the prime minister's office, Cristina Alvarez, and businessman Juan Carlos Barabés.

The judge's decision comes after a hearing he held last Holy Wednesday to inform those involved that, if the case goes to trial, it will be decided by a jury, that is, ordinary citizens.

Both Gomez's defense and the prosecution have insisted that the case does not constitute a crime and should be dismissed.

It is recalled that Sanchez, during the investigations, defended his wife's "honesty" when she was criticized by the right-wing opposition and by Argentine President Javier Milley, who caused a diplomatic crisis by describing her as "corrupt."

"My wife is honest in her profession, serious and responsible, and my government is 'clean' ," the socialist prime minister told parliament, assuring that the charges against her were not based on any tangible evidence.

"I am sure the courts will dismiss" these two lawsuits, because "they are a collection of fraud and slander ," he added.

The investigation for “corruption” and “improper influence” against Begoña Gómez began in mid-April 2024, following a lawsuit filed by the organization Manos limpias (Clean Hands).

Another organization, also affiliated with the far right, Hazte Oir, then filed a second lawsuit before the same judge.
