Russia intends to negotiate with Ukraine on territorial issues during two-day talks starting tomorrow, Tuesday, in Geneva, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today.
Peskov said the presence of chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky "will be necessary," according to Russian media.
Medinsky, although he had previously participated in talks with the Ukrainian side, was absent from the negotiations held in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. Peskov explained that he was not present because the discussions concerned military issues, which do not fall within his area of responsibility.
The Kremlin announced that the new round of talks in Geneva will have an expanded composition and will also include the head of the military intelligence service, Igor Kostyukov, as well as Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin.
Kiev has refused to cede control of territories claimed by Russia, including the Donetsk region, to Moscow, causing discontent in Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly warned that Vladimir Putin should not accept any "gifts" in the framework of negotiations.
Ahead of the talks in Geneva, Galuzin referred to Putin's proposal to temporarily place Ukraine under United Nations administration.
Moscow is ready to discuss the idea with the United States, European countries and other actors, Galuzin told the Russian state news agency TASS. Putin's proposal was widely rejected last year.
In parallel with the negotiations with Ukraine, bilateral talks between the United States and Russia on economic issues are also taking place in Geneva, according to the Kremlin. Putin's special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, is participating in these meetings, and has met several times with the US's chief negotiator, Steve Witkoff.
Dmitriev is pushing for the lifting of sanctions against Russia and is preparing the ground for the resumption of economic contacts with the US in the event of a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
Russia continues to say it intends to end the war against Ukraine, launched by Putin almost four years ago, but on its own terms. Ukraine has so far dismissed Russian demands as unacceptable.
