NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says the war in Ukraine could end within this year.
In an interview with El Pais and the German group RND, he said that the possibility of ending the conflict by 2025 is real, although difficult to predict.
"Of course. We all pray that this war will end as soon as possible. I want to do everything I can to help realize President Trump's vision. I fully share Trump's vision: this massacre must end. So far, about a million Russians have been killed or seriously injured. Russia loses about 20,000 soldiers every month. Can you imagine that? 20,000 soldiers a month. These are fathers and sons who die without gaining almost any territory," he stressed.
The NATO chief also mentioned the long battle for Pokrovsk, noting that Russia has been trying to capture the city for 18 months and still does not fully control it. Rutte stressed that the peace process will require further negotiations after the Geneva talks and that some issues will be discussed in parallel with the EU and NATO.
"This year, Russia has occupied only about 1% of Ukrainian territory and is advancing only a few meters a day. They have been trying to occupy Pokrovsk for 18 months and still have not fully controlled it. More Russians died trying to capture that city than the number of Ukrainians who originally lived there. It is always difficult to make predictions, but I really hope that peace will come soon. Of course, after the Geneva talks there will be further meetings and there will have to be a separate and parallel discussion with the EU and NATO on certain issues. And we are not there yet," he said.
On the other hand, the Kremlin has also been asked about the possibility of ending the war within this year. Foreign Policy Advisor Yuri Ushakov, asked on state television whether Moscow considers it possible to end the war within the next year, as Rutte suggested, he said that "We would like to."
