But it has been a long road to get here, and what will come next in Gaza still remains unclear.
Israel and Hamas have officially reached a ceasefire in Gaza. Currently, Red Cross troops have entered Gaza to receive the first Israeli hostages who are expected to be released, the only guarantee for which this agreement was reached.
But it has been a long road to get here, and what comes next in Gaza remains unclear in the absence of a comprehensive agreement on the enclave's future after the war.
But how did we get here?
Year 2023
October 7: Hamas gunmen launch an attack in southern Israel, overrunning communities and killing 1,200 people.
According to Israeli figures at the time, around 250 people were taken to Gaza, where they are being held captive. The status of the hostages becomes a central issue in the renewed conflict.
October 13: Israel tells residents of Gaza City, home to more than a million people, to evacuate and move south.
That same day, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops enter the Gaza Strip in what is described as a raid. Later that month, Israel launches its full-scale ground offensive in Gaza, marking the beginning of its occupation of the territory.
November 15: Israeli troops enter Gaza's largest hospital, al Shifa, in Gaza City, after a days-long siege during which medical staff say patients, including newborn babies, died from lack of power and supplies.
The IDF says the hospital was used to hide an underground Hamas headquarters, a claim that hospital staff deny.
November 28 : After weeks of fighting, Israel and Hamas declare the first ceasefire of the war. They agree to halt fighting for four days to exchange women and children held hostage in Gaza for Palestinian women and teenagers detained or imprisoned by Israel for security reasons and to allow more aid.
December 1 : The war resumes and Israeli forces launch their first major ground attack in southern Gaza, on the outskirts of the city of Khan Younis.
December 15: Three Israeli hostages are killed by IDF troops who mistakenly opened fire on them.
