Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud, known worldwide as the "sleeping prince", has died at the age of 36, after nearly two decades in a coma.
The blue-blooded youngster was seriously injured in 2005, when he was just 15, in a horrific car accident in London, which left him with a severe head injury and internal bleeding.
The death was announced by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al-Saud, in a touching post on his personal account on X (formerly Twitter), where he stated, among other things:
"O rested soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased with Him, and enter among My righteous servants, enter My Paradise... With deep faith in the will of Allah and with great sorrow, we mourn our beloved son."
Prince Alwaleed was admitted to King Abdulaziz City Medical Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after the accident, where he remained intubated for 19 years, without fully regaining consciousness. Despite his critical condition, the family, and especially his father, never stopped hoping for a miracle.
Characteristic is the video that went around the world in 2020, in which the prince seemed to respond momentarily to verbal stimuli, moving his fingers and briefly raising his hand from the bed.
Prince Alwaleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled and the grandson of Saudi tycoon Alwaleed bin Talal. At the time, he was studying at a military academy in Britain when the tragic car accident occurred.
His funeral is expected to be held tomorrow at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in the capital Riyadh, in the presence of members of the royal family, officials and a large crowd of people.
The news of his loss caused emotion in the Arab world, as his story had become a symbol of faith, hope and family devotion.
