A joint effort between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping could drag the West into a global conflict. If China were to ask Russia to open a new European front to drive allied forces away from Taiwan, the Atlantic Alliance would have less than 18 months to organize a credible global military response...
NATO must urgently address the real possibility of a simultaneous military escalation on two fronts, in Europe and in the Pacific. That is the warning coming from General Alexus G. Grynkewich, the top American commander at the United States European Command, speaking at a conference of senior military leaders and defense industry representatives in Wiesbaden, Germany.
With a background as a fighter pilot and a strong operational career in the Middle East, Grynkewich is the first three-star general to hold the post. His statement aims to reinforce the United States' message of strategic continuity, reassure European allies of the strength of the transatlantic bond, and place NATO within the renewed geopolitical priorities of the US administration.
According to the general , the year 2027 could represent a critical turning point.
"We must be ready with everything we have: equipment, ammunition, defense systems. There is no time to waste," Grynkewich declared.
The hypothesized scenario is that of a global crisis caused by a joint maneuver between Beijing and Moscow: a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan could be coordinated with a Russian offensive in Europe, with the aim of dividing NATO forces and preventing a response focused on the Pacific.
The German newspaper Bild has raised the alarm, highlighting how a joint effort between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping could drag the West into a global conflict. If China were to ask Russia to open a new European front to remove allied forces from Taiwan, the Atlantic Alliance would have less than 18 months to organize a credible global military response.
Even NATO's new Secretary General, Mark Rutte, considered the scenario described by General Grynkewich "plausible." According to him, a Russian offensive launched to ease Chinese aggression against Taiwan would represent a direct challenge to the global geopolitical balance, with the real risk of an uncontrollable escalation.
According to Stripes, an online military website, several representatives present at the Wiesbaden meeting warned that the threats from Russia and China should not be analyzed as separate.
"As far as I'm concerned, each of these existing threats cannot be considered a separate challenge. We need to reflect on how they all intersect," Grynkewich said, adding that NATO countries must respect their commitment to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.
Meanwhile, on the Ukrainian front, Grynkewich confirmed the Alliance's intention to strengthen Kiev's air defenses.
"We will not disclose figures or timelines, but preparations are being made to supply Ukraine with additional Patriot systems," he said, stressing that caution remains necessary even in strategic communications. /Adapted from Pamphlet/
