Iranian authorities appointed Ahmad Vahidi as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), following the death of the previous commander, Mohammad Pakpour, who was killed on Saturday (2/28) during Israeli and United States attacks.
Ahmad Vahidi, born on June 27, 1958, previously served as head of the elite Quds Force, the foreign operations unit of the Revolutionary Guards. He is accused of involvement in bombings against the Israeli embassy and the AMIA Jewish center in Argentina in the 1990s.
In 1992, an explosion at the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires killed 29 people. Two years later, a truck packed with explosives hit the AMIA community center, killing 85 and injuring about 300.
Argentina and Israel have long claimed that Hezbollah carried out the AMIA attack at the request of Iran. In 2024, more than three decades after the event, an Argentine court officially blamed Iran for the attack and labeled it a “terrorist state.”
Interpol has wanted Vahid since 2007 for his alleged role in these attacks. Following the latest court ruling, Argentina resubmitted the request for his arrest.
Vahidi also held the post of Iran's Interior Minister from 2021 to 2024.
His predecessor, Mohammad Pakpour, played a key role in Iran's regional operations and missile programs. He took over the leadership of the Revolutionary Guard in June, following the death of the previous commander during the 12-day war.
