Ali Khamenei reportedly moved to a safe location amid tensions following attacks on Iran

Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader since 1989, is back in the international spotlight after recent attacks by the United States and Israel. According to reports, he may have been moved to an underground bunker, possibly in the Levizani area, northeast of Tehran.

"He is not in Tehran and is in a safe place," an Iranian official told Reuters. According to sources, members of his family may also be in the shelter. The whereabouts of his second son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has been mentioned for years as a possible successor, remain unclear.

After escalating tensions and what has been described as the "12-day war" a few months ago, Khamenei is once again facing a joint US-Israeli operation. US President Donald Trump has stated that the objective of the operation is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to strike its military capabilities.

Public statements do not directly mention the elimination of the supreme leader, however, analysts note that the situation has increased security measures around him. After the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Khamenei's protection has been significantly strengthened and entrusted to a special unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known as the "Vali Amr Protection Corps". According to sources cited by international media, there is concern about possible infiltrations in his inner circle.

From president to supreme leader

Khamenei has not been outside Iran since 1989, when he took over the Islamic Republic after the death of its founder, Ruhollah Khomeini. His appointment was considered a surprise by some analysts, as he was not seen as the most prominent figure of the Islamic revolution.

He had held important positions, including deputy defense minister, and served as Iran's president for two terms starting in 1981. After a constitutional change in 1989, he was declared supreme leader. At the time, he held the religious rank of "hojatoleslam," a rank lower than ayatollah, although he later assumed the full title.

Although not considered to have had the charisma of Khomeini, Khamenei has managed to consolidate power through an alliance with the conservative wing and the Revolutionary Guard. According to analysts, over the years he has expanded the influence of this force in the economy and politics, transforming it into a key pillar of the regime.

Critics describe the system built under his leadership as authoritarian and repressive. The Iranian regime has been accused of brutally suppressing protests, including the Green Movement in 2009 and the "Women, Life, Freedom" protests in 2023, during which hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests were reported.

Of Azerbaijani origin, Khamenei wrote poetry in his youth and was known for his interest in literature. He is married to Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh and has six children – four sons and two daughters. He is described as leading a simple and ascetic lifestyle. In 1981, he survived an assassination attempt that left him partially paralyzed in one arm, and in 2014 he underwent treatment for cancer.

What happens after Khamenei?

If the situation were to escalate to his elimination, a scenario that currently remains hypothetical, Iran could face unpredictable developments. Mojtaba Khamenei's name is often mentioned as a possible successor, but analysts warn of the risk of internal power struggles.

Scenarios such as a military coup, internal conflicts or even a new popular movement are not ruled out. The name of the exiled prince, Reza Pahlavi, has also been mentioned in public debates, who has declared that he is "at the disposal of the Iranian people."

Future developments in Iran are expected to have a wide regional impact, due to the role and influence that Tehran exercises in countries such as Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen. / Taken from Corriere della Sera
