Kimberly A. Cheatle

The head of the Secret Service will have to explain why Trump's security failed...

Donald Trump was targeted on Saturday. Today the silhouette bears the face of Kimberly A. Cheatle and the institution she has led since 2022 and where she has served for nearly thirty years: the Secret Service. The desire to join the police was strengthened by family events. Her brother, who died prematurely in a car accident, wanted to become a policeman, and for her, as she said in an interview, he became a source of inspiration.

The dynamics of the attack put the agency's back against the wall. Many flaws in the prevention of the event, also the situation was chaotic when the candidate had to leave. Errors that have been added to a heavy tradition, with "service" constantly considered in crisis. The staff is considered insufficient - more than 7,000 officials are not enough - the morale of the wards has dropped significantly, shifts have increased.

The chronic difficulty that has been emphasized by the "wind" that blows over America. Extremism, polarization, the demonization of the political opponent and the justification of any means to stop it, the propensity of some for violence and the known availability of weapons. Everyone can be a threat, but every single threat must be analyzed and prevented.

All of this is on Kimberly A. Cheatle's desk. Republicans are holding the director accountable, while information that is inaccurate but contributes to complicating things is spreading.

A well-known conservative representative, Ann Coulter, presented a list of signatures to contest the quotas of women in the ranks of the Secret Service. An accusation related to what happened at the Trump rally, where some of the women in the security group appeared uneasy during those emotional moments.

And so Cheatle finds himself under siege, with three missions to tackle:

First. Her "department" is the subject of an investigation. She must show that she has done everything possible and prove it with reliable facts. The investigation was demanded by Trump's followers, but was ordered by President Joe Biden, who knows the lady better than anyone because she runs his "defense".

The second. Ensuring maximum protection during the remainder of the election campaign, where there may still be risk. Again in the official statement she promised "flexibility".

The third. Help shed light on the ambush at the rally, a task split between different agencies and not always in harmony. The coordination missed the crucial aspect: control of the roof where the killer was stationed. The Secret Service knew of the critical situation, but believed that the local police should deal with him with searches and then guard him with a team of snipers. It didn't, and Pennsylvania authorities shifted the blame to the federal agency that obviously has more weight in the reporting line. So there was a gap.

Kimberley Cheatle will be called to testify on July 22 before congressmen. Questions, auditions, criticism await him.

In the country there are those who doubt everything and not only. For some, shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks is a new Lee Oswald (the former Marine who killed John Kennedy). For others a puppet, a manipulated person, a provocateur led into chaos. To others still a "mutant", a seemingly calm former student turned sniper. And the problem, however, is that the nation is fragmented. Congress has been insulted and attacked. Every truth risks being accepted only from one side. It's always been a little, but now it's even more. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from 'Corriere Della Sera'
