Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has sparked a new clash between Moscow and Kiev, saying that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is "no longer" the legitimate representative of his country.
The statement was based on the fact that the presidential elections in Ukraine were postponed last year due to the imposition of a state of emergency.
"When the time comes to sign documents, everyone will have to have a clear understanding that the person signing is the legitimate representative," Lavrov noted, adding that "according to the Ukrainian constitution, Zelensky is currently not legitimate."
The response from the Ukrainian side was not long in coming. Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sibikha rejected the Russian official's statements, calling them absurd.
"Nothing is more absurd than a lecture on legitimacy from someone who has been sitting in the same chair for 21 years, serving a man who has been in power for more than 25 years," he stressed.
