Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reacted publicly after numerous reports about his health condition and recent developments in Tehran, stressing that the country faces attempts at destabilization.
According to Al Jazeera, he writes: “ The enemy’s media campaign aims to undermine our national unity and our national security. Iran’s unity will be strengthened and become more resilient, and the enemy’s malicious attempts to undermine our unity must not succeed .”
His reaction comes at a time when reports from The New York Times and other international media speak of a deterioration in his health after the airstrikes of February 28, at the beginning of the conflict with a coalition led by the US and Israel.
According to these sources, Khamenei was injured during the bombings that hit the compound he was in in Tehran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, a cardiac surgeon by profession, is reported to have taken charge of his treatment, in collaboration with the Minister of Health.
Iranian sources quoted by international media say the supreme leader has undergone several surgeries, including operations on his hand and foot, and is expected to be fitted with prosthetics. He has also suffered severe burns to his face and lips, which have affected his ability to communicate and may require plastic surgery.
Despite this, The New York Times notes that he remains “mentally alert and active,” according to sources. However, contact with him has been severely limited and is mainly through medical staff, while communication takes place through handwritten messages.
At the same time, reports suggest that senior Revolutionary Guard and government officials avoid visits, due to security concerns and the risk of possible monitoring by Israel.
These developments coincide with other reports of tensions at the top of Iran's power structure and an increasing role for the Revolutionary Guard in decision-making. International media have also cited internal clashes and difficulties in coordinating strategic policies, although Iranian authorities have denied these allegations.
