A letter signed by 56 MPs from Europe and the USA has been sent to Brussels, Washington and London with the request to have a balancing policy towards Kosovo and Serbia. In the letter, these powers are criticized for leaning towards Belgrade.
The European Union has confirmed that it has received the letter, but says that it does not comment on Borrell's "correspondence".
"As a general rule, we do not comment publicly on correspondence received by the High Representative from various interlocutors. If the relevant actors write to the High Representative, he responds through the relevant channels, we do not correspond in the media. This particular letter from 56 MPs from some EU member states and some other countries, we can confirm that the High Representative has just received it", EU spokesman Peter Stano told Express.
Stano says that the EU's foreign policy is unanimous, adding that the Union counts thousands of parliamentarians.
"We remember that the EU has 27 member states with 27 parliaments and thousands of parliamentarians. The EU's foreign policy and approaches to partners are formed by 27 member states represented by their governments, unanimously. The EU is a neutral facilitator in the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia", he says.
The EU says it assesses the engagement of dialogue parties based on their individual merits and reports to member states.
The EU added that it has made requests to both parties to resolve the current tensions and to enable the continuation of the normalization process.
Also, Stano said that the European Union is monitoring Serbia if it is fulfilling the requirements and that it is ready to take measures in case they fail.
Member states are consulted on EU actions and the EU cooperates closely with its partners, especially the US. The EU is currently closely monitoring the fulfillment of EU requirements by Serbia and is ready to take measures in case of non-compliance with these requirements.
After the imposition of measures against Kosovo by the European Union and the United States due to the tensions raised in the north of the country with the placement of Albanian mayors in municipal facilities, critical voices were added for bias since no punitive measures were taken against Serbia.
The British MP, Alicia Kearns, who has consistently been the most vocal on this issue, has published the letter that was sent to the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, and the British Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly.
"The current approach is not working. We ask the international community to learn from our past and ensure that we do not adopt policies for the Balkans that are biased towards Belgrade. We also ask you to consider the possibility of adopting a policy of preventive diplomacy to avoid further escalation of the security and political situation in the north of Kosovo, with balance and proportionality in every statement and every punishment or sanction that is undertaken, and that those who respect the rule of law and democracy are not punished", the letter said, among other things.
