The Israeli military said Tuesday evening that it expects its offensive in Gaza City to take several months to complete, marking the first time frame it has given for its plan to take control of the enclave's largest population center.
“ We will operate until the war objectives are achieved. We are not limited by time. We estimate that it will take several months to secure the city and its centers of gravity, and more months to completely clear the city due to the deep and entrenched infrastructure ,” Israel Defense Forces spokeswoman Brigadier General Effie Defrin told reporters.
The United Nations has warned that Israel's plan to occupy Gaza City puts about 1 million Palestinian residents at risk of forcible displacement. On Monday, an Israeli official estimated that 320,000 Palestinians have fled the city so far.
