Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to prioritize diplomacy to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East, amid severe tensions with Iran following recent military attacks.
According to the official statement of the Turkish presidency, during a telephone conversation with Rutte, Erdogan stressed that Ankara is closely following the conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States. He reiterated that diplomacy must be given a real chance to ensure a lasting and sustainable peace in the region, while avoiding further escalation.
The conversation between them also included issues on the NATO agenda, as well as regional and global developments. Erdogan also mentioned preparations for the NATO Leaders' Summit expected to be held in Ankara in July, promising that Turkey will organize it at the appropriate level of importance.
Erdogan held another phone call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where he again focused on the regional conflict. According to the presidential office, he stressed that the current conflicts are negatively affecting regional and global security, reiterating his call for all parties to return to the negotiating table and resume dialogue.
Erdogan has repeatedly stressed that Turkey is ready to play a mediating role for de-escalation and dialogue. This intensive diplomacy by Ankara reflects its efforts to position itself as a key actor in preventing a wider war in the Middle East.
