Two of Khamenei's confidants killed in Israeli and US airstrikes on Tehran
The situation in the Middle East is out of control, following the coordinated and expected attack by the Americans and Israelis against Iran on Saturday morning.
The initial attack against Iran targeted the capital Tehran and at least 7 other areas of the country, as mapped by Al Jazeera.
The US presence in the Middle East has been strong in recent decades and has recently been reinforced in anticipation of an attack. According to a chart from the Arab Network, approximately 40,000 to 50,000 soldiers are stationed in 19 countries in the wider region, including Cyprus and Turkey.
Iran responded by launching attacks against Israel, later expanding its operation with what it called targeted attacks on countries in the Gulf region.
Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, Al-Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates and the fifth US base in Bahrain have been targeted by Iranian missile attacks, according to the Iranian Fars news agency.
Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Army, Amir Khatami, was killed in a series of Israeli airstrikes in Iran, although Iranian authorities have yet to confirm the information.
"Amir Khatami, commander of the army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has been eliminated," it is reported, however without any official statement confirming the information.

Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, the head of Iran's judiciary, was also reportedly killed in the attacks. Mohseni-Ejei previously oversaw Iran's judiciary, which has faced international criticism for harsh sentences handed down during the crackdown on protests.
