Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, has reacted sharply after the offensive launched by the US and Israel against Iran today, directly criticizing US President Donald Trump.
In a public statement, Medvedev mocked the US president's stance, saying that "the peacemaker once again showed his face."
According to Medvedev, the negotiations held earlier with Iran were "just a distraction", as he stressed that 'no one had any intention of really negotiating'.
He added that the current clash is a matter of patience between the parties, drawing a historical comparison between the United States and Iran.
"The US is only 249 years old, while the Persian Empire was founded more than 2,500 years ago. Let's see what will happen in 100 years," Medvedev declared.
The Russian official's reaction comes on a day of escalating tensions in the Middle East. Earlier, President Trump confirmed the launch of "major combat operations" against Iran, while explosions were reported in Tehran and smoke was seen in some areas of the capital.
On the other hand, Israeli authorities declared a state of emergency and announced an increased level of readiness, amid warnings of retaliation from Iran. The situation remains dynamic, as the parties exchange strong and threatening statements.
