Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the expansion of Israel's occupation into neighboring southern Lebanon, as his forces target the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.
Netanyahu said he has told his military to further expand what he called the “existing buffer security zone.” He has vowed to fundamentally change the security situation there.
"I have just given instructions for the further expansion of the existing security zone. We are determined to fundamentally change the situation in the north. Hezbollah still has residual capabilities to launch rockets at us," Netanyahu said during a visit to northern Israel.
He added that the decision was aimed at strengthening Israel's security position along its northern border. It comes amid ongoing tensions along Israel's northern border, where cross-border hostilities have raised fears of a wider regional escalation.
In Lebanon, officials say more than 1,100 people have been killed in fighting since the start of the Iran-Iraq war.
