Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have reacted publicly for the first time since their arrest by US forces, declaring that they are "calm and steadfast."
The couple, who have been held in a federal prison in Brooklyn since the January operation, sent a message via social media, expressing that they are facing the situation with calm and confidence.
The statement says they are "in constant prayer" and thank supporters for their solidarity, while it is not clear who published the message on their behalf.
Since their capture in Caracas and transfer to the US, Maduro and Flores have had no direct access to the internet or media, communicating only through limited phone calls with family members and lawyers.

According to sources close to the Venezuelan government, Maduro spends time reading the Bible and continues to be considered "president" by some other prisoners in the detention center.
Meanwhile, his son has stated that the former leader is in good physical condition and calm, despite the prison conditions.
Maduro, who has described himself as a "prisoner of war", has denied all charges against him, including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism and drug trafficking, for which he is facing US justice.
The trial against him continues in New York, while the court has rejected several defense requests regarding the financing of the legal team.
