A week ago, it seemed that Ukraine would be able to buy Tomahawk missiles from the US, but after Vladimir Putin contacted Trump in a two-hour phone call, he appears to have convinced the US president not to sign the deal.
As a result, Zelenskyy left his meeting with Trump in Washington last Friday with hostility between the parties. Meanwhile, both Ukraine and Russia have continued with Storm Shadow missile strikes and heavy drone strikes at night, respectively.
The politics of this are very interesting, because the three presidents, Trump, Putin and Zelensky, are trying to demonstrate something with these weapons. President Putin is showing that he will not stop. President Zelensky is demonstrating that he has European support and that it is not over yet.
And President Trump, in one sense he's going around in circles, but in another sense he's not, because he seems to be coming out of this fight, and that suggests a split in the transatlantic relationship between the United States and the European powers that should support Zelensky.
If so, that division would be the most important element in European security since NATO's founding in 1949./ SkyNews
