War in Ukraine, Trump and Putin to meet in Alaska on August 15; will the plan

Donald Trump had mentioned a possible "territorial swap" between Ukraine and Russia as part of a future agreement between the two warring countries, without clarifying how far the negotiations have progressed...

"The long-awaited meeting between me, the President of the United States of America, and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the great state of Alaska," Donald Trump announced via Truth Social.

The Kremlin has also confirmed that the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place on Friday, August 15, in Alaska, a choice that the White House chief of staff described as "quite logical," according to Russian state news agency TASS, which quoted Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president.

The Kremlin also announced that it had invited US President Trump to visit Russia after the summit in Alaska.

Putin's foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said that if there were to be another meeting between the two presidents after the Alaska meeting, it would likely take place in Russia.

This would be the first face-to-face meeting between a sitting US president and Putin since the summer of 2021.

Donald Trump had mentioned a possible "territorial swap" between Ukraine and Russia as part of a future agreement between the two warring countries, without clarifying how far the negotiations have progressed.

"There will be a land swap for the benefit of both, but we'll talk about that later," the US president said at the White House, adding that the issue "is complicated, it's not really easy." "We're talking about an area where fighting has been going on for three and a half years, part of which will be recovered," he said, avoiding being more specific.

US officials, including Trump, have briefed European leaders and Ukrainian officials about a plan offered by Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

Under the plan that Putin presented to Trump's foreign policy envoy, Steve Witkoff, at a meeting in Moscow on Wednesday, Russia demands that Ukraine relinquish the eastern region of Donbas, most of which is currently under Russian occupation, as well as Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.

Trump, who has acknowledged his frustration with the Russian president in recent months over the escalation of the conflict, sounded more optimistic about the prospect of a peace deal on Friday. And he suggested his main focus was negotiating an end to hostilities as soon as possible.

"European leaders want to see peace," Trump told reporters at the White House. "I think President Putin wants to see peace and Zelensky wants to see peace."

He later added: "My instinct really tells me we have a chance for" peace.

It remains unclear whether a meeting between Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky will take place. The Ukrainian has repeatedly called for such a discussion. Trump has also stressed the need for direct talks between Moscow and Kiev at the highest level, recently saying that they are not a prerequisite for his personal meeting with Putin.

The Kremlin chief has been quite reserved about a possible trilateral summit. While he considers such a meeting possible, the conditions for it are still far away, he recently stated. /Adapted from Pamphlet/
