Violence between rival cartels is escalating in southern Mexico. A recent clash between cartels over control of drug smuggling channels and migrants has forced hundreds of people from their homes.
According to "BBC", locals described how they hid in their homes, while their homes were hit by bullets during a gunfight between cartels that lasted for several hours.
More than 700 residents have been displaced from their homes near the Guatemalan border, a Mexican official said.
Criminal organizations such as the CJNG and the Sinaloa cartel have infiltrated the region due to its proximity to the border with Guatemala and important transit routes for migrants that they use.
The hardest hit communities are Chicomuselo and La Concordia in Chiapas state.
